The Ballad of Gaucho Gil (Giddens/Packard/Ruiz)

Dispatch . . . from the Dept. of Mercy_____
From Zalazar, it’s chief
“Find this man they call Gil
Hang him from the breakax tree
He sighed “Gauchito Gil
Come to me
A moment before God
That is my plea
I’ll trust the hangman’s hands
My power cannot touch him
He’s an innocent man”

On the wind swept Pay Ubra
At a crossroads near Paso de Los Libra
A young senorita stands in the doorway
Torn from her lover by the winds of hate
She cried Gauchito Gil
Think of me
A moment before god
That is my plea
Go in god’s hands she prayed
He said “Your prayers come as comfort,
For I’m an innocent man”

In a vision he saw mercy
And mercy spoke to him
She said “gaucho you are an honorable man
Do not spill the blood of your kin”
She cried “Gauchito Gil
You frighten me
A moment before god
That is my plea
They’ll tie your beautiful hands”
He cried “I’m sorry for the violence
They hang an innocent man”

On the gallows the hangman waited
Something was terrible wrong
He shuddered when he saw the gaucho’s face
Could he save his dieing son?
He sighs “Gauchito Gil
Pray for him
A moment before god
That is my plea”
The gaucho turned to face the flood
“Healing comes with mercy
And my innocent blood”

If you listen to the winds of night
They will share his fate with you
And if you listen to the winds at night
They’ll sing his memory
They sigh Gauchito Gil
Pray for peace
A moment before god
That is the plea
He turns to face the flood
“My prayers will intercede my friend
I shed innocent blood”
